PM demands apology for ‘inaccurate reporting’ by local newspaper

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley is calling on a local newspaper to issue a public apology and a correction to an article in which he asserts he was inaccurately quoted concerning his statements on proposed changes to the national Coat-of-Arms.

In an official statement from Office of the Prime Minister, the PM also notes that an apology must be extended to political analyst Dr Winford James, as well.

“In today’s Daily Express on page seven, a story by Sherlan Ramsubhag headlined, ‘PM defends pan plan … hits back at political analysts’—purporting to report on a public meeting held in La Horquetta on Tuesday night—erroneously claims Dr Rowley ‘lambasted’ Dr Winford James, a columnist who regularly writes for the Trinidad Guardian,” the statement said.

It noted: “The Prime Minister did not at any stage during his remarks take issue with or name political analyst Dr Winford James.  Dr Rowley is fully aware that Dr Winford James is not a current staffer at the University of the West Indies and therefore his reference to current staffers, analysts and commentators at UWI could not have referred to Dr Winford James and clearly referred to others who are known to the Trinidad Express.”

“The Prime Minister made reference to people who are teaching political science at UWI and, therefore, could not have been referring to Dr Winford James, an eminent linguist, who is not known to be a teacher of political science at UWI,” the release added.
