A woman died electrocuted during the rains in Maracaibo

A 62-year-old woman died on Saturday from an electric shock during heavy rains that began early in the morning in Maracaibo, Zulia state.

The victim was identified by relatives as Mercedes Josefina Amaya Ríos. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 am in a house on La Múcura Street, in the Santa Lucía parish.

According to the Noticia al Día website, Maracaibo Fire Department personnel went to the emergency site and tried to resuscitate her without success. It was revealed that the house, where she lived with her sister, floods when it rains.

When it started to rain, according to preliminary reports, Amaya Ríos was with her sister in the kitchen making coffee. She is then believed to have left the house to look for a cat, but The pet was not in the yard but on the second floor, which has a metal staircase.

The woman received the electric shock when she touched the stairs. Authorities believe the accident occurred due to a damaged cable next to the structure.

Mayor Rafael Ramírez confirmed the death of the 60-year-old woman in his assessment of the damage caused by the rains in Maracaibo.
