Alarming increase in cat abandonment in Mérida

He abandonment of cats in the state of Merida is on the rise and is causing concern among residents and animal protection organizations.

Marcela Castro, coordinator of the Huellitas de Esperanza foundation, reported that the number of cases has grown alarmingly from mid-2023.

“Every day we find animals on the street, many of them abandoned in a house that has been uninhabited for years,” Castro told Union Radio.

According to data from the foundation, the numbers went from one or two per week to eight adult cats and more than 25 abandoned kittens.

Faced with this problem, the foundations consider it important to educate children about the responsible care of animals.

Oriana Gil, representative of the Animals Without Voice volunteering, highlighted that teach the little ones about responsible ownership of pets.

«We want visit schools and give talks so that children learn about respect and care for animals,” he said.

Some neighbors have also reported cases of poisoning and abuse, which increases the concern.
