Ali exploring options to grow basketball in Guyana
TORONTO – President of Guyana, His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali recently met with Toronto Raptors president and vice-chairman Masai Ujiri, in an attempt to explore avenues through which the Canadian-based NBA team can support the growth of basketball in Guyana.
At the meeting, which took place at the Raptor’s state-of-the-art training facility – the OVO Athletic Centre – Ali and Ujiri also discussed key areas of focus, including the development of sports facilities, the organization of coaching clinics, women in sports, talent identification programs, youth empowerment through sports and the promotion of grassroots basketball initiatives in the country.
Ujiri, one of the main architects of the Raptors’ 2019 NBA title, is also the co-founder of Giants of Africa.
Recognising the popularity of the Raptors in the Caribbean, both leaders also delved into a broader initiative aimed at boosting basketball across the region, leveraging the expertise and experience of the Raptors and Giants of Africa to inspire and nurture young talent.
