The National Academy of Medicine has warned about an increase in covid-19 cases in Venezuela, despite the general perception that the pandemic is a thing of the past.

The president of the academy, Dr. Huniades Urbina, pointed out that, although infections have decreased in much of the world, the virus is still active and has reemerged in recent weeks in the country.

In a recent statement, Urbina stated that Both public and private hospitals have reported an uptick in infections. However, he stressed that the lack of official data has left doctors relying on informal reports.

“In Venezuela, during the last week there have been reports of an increase in Covid-19 cases, both in the private and public spheres,” he added during an interview with journalist Román Lozinski.

The doctor explained that, although the coronavirus has recently been compared to common respiratory diseases such as influenza, it still represents a health threat. This especially during the rainy season, when other viral infections also tend to increase.

Faced with this situation, Urbina and other health experts have urged the population not to let their guard down and to maintain prevention measures. They recommend the use of masks in closed places with poor ventilation. Especially for those in risk groups, such as people with chronic diseases or older adults.

“People think that this has already happened. We talk about covid, in the past tense. No, covid is present. So, if you are cautious, wear a mask when you ride public transport, which is packed with people, when you go to closed places: restaurants, very crowded cinemas. As a precaution, put on the mask,” Urbina said.
