Back to school not so happy, the factors that affect

  • Oct, Tue, 2024

The reality of the classroom affects thousands of Venezuelan students and, the truth is, very little is said about this in the country. The lack of teachers, the high costs of school supplies and schools in poor condition make the start of classes in the 2024-2025 school year is not as happy as the McDonald’s boxes.

According to figures provided by the government, more than 5 million students started classes weeks ago. However, many Venezuelan families do not have the opportunity to give their children a good start to the school year, due to how difficult and expensive it is to buy supplies, snacks, and pay tuition at private schools. However, although private education may be “better”, the reality is that all institutions suffer the consequences of the country’s economic crisis, comments Nancy Hernández, president of Fenasopadres, for the NGO Provea.

Added to all this is the quality and structure of schools, high schools and even some universities. The lack of cleaning and maintenance in school areas has been evident in recent months. Many complaints about infrastructure of these places causes students to stop taking classes or watch subjects in inappropriate places for this. A very clear example of this problem is in the recent complaints by the NGO Fordisi, which has made visible the state in which many educational centers are located.

Start of classes: being a teacher in Venezuela is an act of love

In addition to all of the above, there is an even more serious problem. It’s like the toy in the happy meal, what did you feel when as a child you didn’t get the toy you wanted? Well, Venezuelan teachers have the same reaction when they see their salary, and it is a fight that has been going on for years and years, but teachers continue to be the lowest paid in Latin America.

It is these salaries that form the shortage of teachers, thus delaying the education of new generations and putting at risk the inspiration of young people to continue studying. Who could be motivated in a school or high school when they only see four of seven subjects due to lack of teachers? This is the reality that teachers, students and parents experience throughout the country in this return to school, which does not seem to be so happy.
