SOUTHAMPTON – Barbadian Jacob Bethell failed to fire with bat or ball in his England debut as they went under by 28 runs to Australia in the opening T20 in England on Wednesday.

Playing at the Rose Bowl, the 20-year-old Bethell went wicketless in three overs that cost 28 runs, as Australia were dismissed for 179 in 19.3 overs after they lost the toss and were sent in to bat.

Fellow Barbadian Jofra Archer grabbed two wickets for 31 runs from 3.3 overs.

Batting at number five, the left-handed all-rounder made just two runs from six balls before he was undone by a delivery from leg spinner Adam Zampa, as England were limited to 151 in 19.2 overs.

Arriving at the crease with England in early trouble at 46 for three in the sixth over, Bethell lost his leg stump after he played back to a ball by Zampa which skidded on and caught him in the crease.

The second T20I in the three-match series begins on Friday at Cardiff.
