The local trio of Zachery Byng, Bjorn Hall, and Jaylon Chapman all won their round-of-32 matches to secure their place in the last-16 of the main draw of the Summer Bowl International Tennis Federation J30 Junior Tournament at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Road, in Tacarigua on Monday.

The third-seeded Byng won his round-of-32 encounter against Barbadian Keyan Goodridge 6-0, and next faxes Jamaican Kahj Mark Anthony Clarke, who won by walkover against the late arriving T&T’s Daniel Rahaman.

Hall was leading his American opponent 7-6(4), 1-1 in the second set when the hot and humid conditions seemed to get the better of the latter, who retired, giving the T&T player a place in the next round against Italian Mattia Salvatore Tartaglia, who also won easily after T&T’s Jovan Garibana retired trailing 0-4 in the first set, and Chapman whipped Mexico’s Jeronimo Escalante-Mangion 6-1, 6-4 to set up a clash against fifth-ranked Ron Roopesh of Great Britain, who humbled T&T’s Luca Denoon 6-4, 6-2 in their first round encounter.

However, the other local boys involved in the round-of-32 matches were Jayden Mitchell, Aaron Subero, Deron Dumas, Nirav Dougdeen, Daniel Dumas, and Beckham Sylvester.

Mitchell came up short versus Jamaican Kyle Malachi Alexander Clarke 4-6, 2-6; Subero was swept aside by seventh-ranked Brazilian Diego Valpereiro 3-8, 2-6; Dumas went under to Germany’s Nick Mertgens 0-6, 1-6; Dougdeen was beaten by Austrian Jan Goeberndorfer-Steiner 1-6, 2-6; Dumas failed to trouble the scores in a 0-6, 0-6 loss to Brazilian Pedro Antonio Valpereiro; and Sylvester was dumped by the USA’s Everett Garrett 0-6, 2-6.

In the two other round-of-32 matches, fourth-seeded Alex Huszar blanked Israel’s Yonatan Wiesel 6-0, 6-0, and Canada’s Zzavier Hastick defeated Barbadian Aidan Clarke 6-2, 6-4 and will face off with top-ranked T&T’s Kale Dalla Costa in the round-of-16.

Khan and Mohammed join Campbell-Smith in quarters

T&T’s Madison Khan and Naomi Mohammed joined third-seeded countrywoman Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith in the quarterfinals of the 12-player draw with wins over compatriots Shiloh Walker and Reina Alexis.

Khan dismissed Walker 7-5, 6-0 and will meet fourth-ranked Ageela Malik of the USA in the quarterfinals after the latter was handed a round-of-16 bye, while Mohammed slammed Alexis 6-3, 6-1 and will come up against El Salvadorean Sienna Poma for a spot in the semifinals.

Campbell-Smith, who was on a bye in the round-of-16, will face USA’s Mildalyn D’Aguilar, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over T&T’s Lilly Mohammed in the quarterfinals, while T&T’s other entrant, Cyra Ramcharan, was trounced by USA’s Sydney Wright 0-6, 0-6, with the latter advancing to a clash against Russia’s Iana Kravchenkova, the top seed. The tournament resumes today at 9 a.m. with boys round-of-16 and girls quarterfinal singles matches, as well as Boys doubles round-of-16 and girls doubles quarterfinals.
