CAL plane taken out of service after ‘warning light’ comes on

A “mayday” distress call was made on a Caribbean Airlines flight from Tobago to Trinidad after a warning light came on. But, Caribbean Airlines said the plane was able to land safely at the Piarco International Airport.

In a statement, CAL said flight BW 1509 operating the airbridge, experienced a technical issue en route to Trinidad, “specifically, a warning light came on in the cockpit.”

According to the recording of the conversation between the pilot and air traffic control—taken from a website which allows you to listen to the exchanges between pilots and air traffic control, LiveATC—the pilot declared “mayday” just before 10 am with an “engine fire warning” on engine number 2.

“The pilots initiated the relevant operating procedure, and the aircraft landed safely and taxied to a gate position at the Piarco International Airport where all passengers and crew disembarked,” Caribbean Airlines said in a release.

The airline added, “In keeping with the regulations, the aircraft has been temporarily withdrawn from service and all appropriate inspections and procedures are in progress. Once these are cleared the aircraft will be released.”

There was no word on the number of passengers who were onboard the plane at the time of the issue.
