Chaguanas business man killed-chamber upset
Chaguanas businessman Tariq Razak, 59, was gunned down outside his business on the western end of Eric Street on Saturday morning. Residents reported hearing three loud explosions shortly after 6 am, and Razak’s body, bearing gunshot wounds to the head, was found wearing a blue shirt and blue trousers. His body was slumped next to a grey sedan parked outside the compound gate. Relatives declined to speak to the media.
Residents suggested that Razak may have been experiencing financial difficulties and operated a construction business. Officers from the Chaguanas Police and Homicide South attended the scene.
Baldath Maharaj, head of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CCIC), expressed deep sorrow and outrage over Razak’s brutal murder. Maharaj stated, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this tragic and distressing time.”
He continued, “This heinous act highlights a troubling reality: violent crime, particularly murder, has become a prevalent method for resolving disputes. This is further exacerbated by an alarmingly low detection rate of less than 15 percent and minimal convictions. Such circumstances foster a dangerous sense of impunity among perpetrators and erode public confidence in the justice system.”
Maharaj pointed out that the ripple effects of these violent acts extend beyond personal tragedy and community safety. They deter shoppers and visitors from coming to Chaguanas, negatively affecting businesses already struggling with economic challenges he said. , and added, this creates an environment of fear and uncertainty, which stifles economic growth and undermines the borough’s reputation as a hub for commerce and trade.
