The Chilean Senate approved on Tuesday a resolution, promoted by conservative parties, which calls on the country’s president, Gabriel Boric, to issue an arrest warrant against Nicolás Maduro to the International Criminal Court, alleging “serious crimes that constitute a threat to the peace, security and well-being of humanity.”

“It is not possible to ignore the suffering of thousands of victims due to various types of persecution that have occurred in Venezuela for years and especially due to the persecution suffered by thousands of victims after the presidential election held on July 28 of this year, among which are especially vulnerable groups such as girls and boys,” they consider.

The document approved by the Chilean Senate is based on the persecution and crimes against humanity attributed to Maduro.

It also stresses the need for Chile, as a member state of the Rome Statute, comply with its international obligations to prosecute crimes against humanity.

The initiative was presented by senators Felipe Kast, founder of Political Evolution (Evópoli), and Francisco Chahuán, of the National Renewal party, and was approved unanimously in the presence of legislators from the Social Christian Party, the Green Social Regionalist Federation and the Christian Democratic Party.
