Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Venezuelan counterpart Yván Gil in New York on Monday and said that China will continue to support Venezuela in defending its sovereignty and national dignity, regardless of changes in the international scenario.

“China and Venezuela are good friends and partners, and regardless of how international circumstances change, China will continue to supporting Venezuela in the defense of its sovereignty and national dignityas well as in the country’s economic and social development,” Wang said, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement.

Wang conveyed greetings from Chinese head of state Xi Jinping and congratulated Nicolás Maduro on his supposed re-election as president, a position that contrasts with that of the European Union (EU), which today reiterated that it does not recognize the legitimacy of the Venezuelan leftist, according to the high representative of the community group for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell.

The statements reaffirm the EU’s diplomatic stance after the European Parliament approved a non-binding resolution this week recognising Edmundo González as the legitimate winner of the Venezuelan elections of 28 July.

“The Venezuelan people will unite and overcome the challenges, achieving new successes in the development of the country,” said the Chinese foreign minister.

China-Venezuela relationship

For his part, Gil highlighted that last year Maduro and Xi They elevated their relations to a ‘strategic partnership that is foolproof’, and this year they celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, marking a “key moment” in their bilateral history.

According to the Venezuelan minister, Venezuela is “China’s most reliable partner,” committed to continuing to strengthen cooperation for the mutual benefit of both peoples.

Wang’s visit to the United States is part of his participation in the 79th United Nations General Assembly, where he represents China and will seek support from the Global South at a time of friction with the West.

The minister, who will be in New York until September 28 as Xi’s special envoy, will also attend the high-level debate of the Security Council and hold meetings with his counterparts from the Group of Twenty most developed and emerging countries (G20) and BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, plus Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia).
