Claudia Sheinbaum asks to lift sanctions on Maduro

  • Dec, Tue, 2024

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured this Tuesday that her government is preparing to receive thousands of Mexicans living in the United States in case the president-elect, Donald Trump, finalizes his intention to carry out mass deportations. He also insisted on asking to lift the blockades against the regimes of Venezuela and Cuba. He believed that these measures “affect the people.”

“Even in these cases, if there were a (massive) deportation, We are also preparing to welcome to Mexico all Mexicans who for some reason are deported from the United States. It is our obligation,” said the president during her morning press conference.

Asked about her position regarding the threats of the future US president, who will take office on January 20 and begin a mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, The Mexican leader pointed out that will talk with Trump.

A humanitarian strategy, Sheinbaum’s proposal

“We have stated that we have a humanitarian strategy that assists migrants before reaching the northern border, We also agree that legal migration channels be opened,” Sheinbaum said.

He stated that he will advocate for the causes to be addressed as, in his opinion, Mexico has done with social programs such as Sembrando Vida, focused on farmers, and Young People Building the Future, which employs apprentices.

“We have to insist that the best way to reduce migration, if that is your interest, It is by fundamentally addressing the cause of migration, which is necessity, poverty essentially. “The majority of families do not migrate out of choice, they migrate out of necessity, so that will always be our position.”

The Mexican president highlighted that there is collaboration and a relationship with the United States that goes beyond the 3,000 kilometers of border, but stressed the importance of respecting Mexico’s sovereignty. as happened during the administration of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).

“We are also going to appeal to that relationship that existed (with the previous presidency) and that there be a similar relationship and collaborate with high-level dialogues in whatever is necessary, always respecting our sovereignty and our principles, but we are going to look for what actions we can collaborate on,” he said.
