Commonwealth Secretary-General remembers Sir Shridath Ramphal

The Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC is remembering Sir Shridath Ramphal, who died yesterday at the age of 95. Sir Shridath, known as Sir Sonny, served as the second Secretary-General of the Commonwealth from 1975 to 1990.

In a statement, Secretary-General Scotland  called him “a giant of the Caribbean and one of the Commonwealth’s brightest lights.” She highlighted his extraordinary service marked by vision, compassion, and a deep commitment to the Commonwealth’s values. 

Scotland noted that Sir Sonny’s statesmanship was deeply rooted in his humanity, with his leadership characterised by a belief in dialogue, diplomacy, and cooperation. She praised his tireless advocacy for small states and his efforts to bridge global divides. She said  his most significant achievement was his role in opposing apartheid in South Africa.

Scotland quoted Nelson Mandela, who described him as someone who “has chosen the whole world as their theatre” in his fight for human justice. Scotland said Sir Sonny’s legacy is one of unity, hope, and justice.
