Cricketer among three killed in Barataria, Morvant
Three men were killed in two separate incidents in the Barataria and Morvant areas from Thursday into yesterday.
In one of the incidents, two men were gunned down in Barataria on Thursday night.
Police said at 8.15 pm, Hakim Mitchell, 36, was walking near 5th Street, Barataria, when gunmen opened fire on him and 54-year-old Junior Olliviere, who was seated in his car.
Witnesses reported that a dark-coloured Suzuki Swift stopped near the men, and two masked assailants got out the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Mitchell and Olliviere were both fatally wounded. Police said Mitchell was an innocent bystander whilst Olliviere was believed to be the target.
Mitchell, a cricketer who played for the Bess Motors Marchin Patriots, was well-regarded within his team and community.
In a statement yesterday, the team expressed their sorrow.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our former player, Hakim Mitchell, better known as Mitch Man. Your dedication on and off the field has left a lasting impact. May his soul rest in peace, and may his loved ones find comfort during this time,” the team said.
The police are continuing to investigate the incident but have yet to confirm a motive.
In the second incident, Josiah Reid, 25, was walking to work at 7 am when he was shot and killed in Second Caledonia (Vegas), Morvant, by unknown assailants.
Residents were left in shock, describing Reid as a quiet individual with no known ties to criminal activity.
Police are urging anyone with information about any of the shootings to come forward. —RHONDOR DOWLAT
