De Gannes 8th in World U-20
Janae De Gannes finished eighth in the women’s long jump final at the World Under-20 Track and Field Championships which got underway at the Estadio Atletico de la Videna in Lima, Peru Wednesday evening.
The Concorde athlete recorded a distance of 6.09 metres. De Gannes achieved her best leap in the first round of the competition. The reigning Carifta Girls U-20 long jump champion and record-holder (6.50m) then recorded 6.03m in her second effort, 5.84m in the third followed by 5.92m and 5.99m. She fouled on her sixth and final attempt.
Her mark was an improvement on the 6.03m she recorded in the qualifying round on Tuesday.
Delta Amidzovski (Australia) took the gold medal with a personal best 6.58m mark. American Sophia Beckmon was second (6.54m) with Julia Adamczyk (Poland) taking bronze with 6.34.
Jaden Clement did not finish his men’s 400m semifinal heat held last evening as well. The MAP quatermiler started in lane three in the first semifinal race pulled up in the final 100m and fell to the track. He was attended to by medical officials. Jayden Davis of the USA won in 45.79 ahead of South African Udeme Okon (47.08).
Clement squeezed into the men’s 400m semifinals after he finished strongly from lane nine in heat five of the first round earlier yesterday initially in fourth in 47.63. He had missed out on a top-three placing to automatically qualify and his time was not among the three fastest. However, there was a turn of fortune for Clement as Caleb Joshua of Nigeria, who pipped him for the third spot, was disqualified for stepping on the line. The Presentation College-San Fernando student was then promoted by one place and a lane in the semifinal.
Compatriot Kyrell Thomas (Cougars) was hoping to join Cement in the semifinal round but was sixth in heat six in 48.02. The 2024 Carifta Boys U-20 400m fourth-placer started strongly in lane two and was in contention for top three finish coming off the final bend. However, he was overtaken on the homestretch.
Cheyne West (Abilene Wildcats) advanced to the semifinal round in the men’s 400-metre hurdles set for tomorrow. The England-based athlete finished fourth in heat five of the Preliminary Round yesterday in a personal best clocking of 52.18 seconds. He had to wait for the completion of all seven heats to know his fate only the top three in each race were assured to advance. With only three athletes to qualify on time West just got in as the third fastest. West improved on his previous best of 52.59 set in placing second at the English Secondary Schools Championships in Birmingham, England on July 13.
T&T’s other entrant Dorian Charles (Pt Fortin New Jets) came up short in heat two finishing fifth in 53.65.
In the semifinals set for tomorrow, the 2023 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Boys U-18 400m hurdles silver medallist will line up in lane three of heat three. Kairi Gonda of Japan (51.21), Jamaica’s Daniel Wright (51.42) and American Premier Wynn (51.89) are the other contenders in the race. West will be looking to finish first or second to move on to the final set for Saturday.
Jenna-Marie Thomas (IG Fastlane) finished down the field in her heat in the women’s 400m hurdles preliminary. The 16-year-old was eighth in heat three in 1:01.91, 42nd-fastest overall. Multiple Carifta champion Michelle Smith of the US Virgin Islands was the top qualifier with a time of 57.85.
