Defending democracy has been the guide in Venezuela
Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has said that the defence of democracy has been “the only guide for all the decisions we have made and the actions we have undertaken” since the last presidential elections in Venezuela last July.
Albares has made this statement In an article signed by him under the title “Spain with the Venezuelan people” published this Saturday in the magazine “El Socialista”.
In the text, Albares details all the steps taken by Spain since the elections of July 28, from demanding that the official voting records be published, to leading the EU’s response and the signing of the Santo Domingo Declaration, with more than 20 countries in Latin America and Europe.
“Faced with the cynicism of a Spanish right that only uses Venezuela to attack the Spanish government, our convictions and our firm commitment to the Venezuelan people. “In the face of their lies, our actions,” writes the minister.
Albares: The will of Venezuelans expressed at the polls must be respected
Albares also stressed that “the will of Venezuelans expressed at the polls must be respected, because that is democracy,” as must the right to demonstrate and freedom of expression of all Venezuelans.
“We have said that the freedom and integrity of all Venezuelans must be respected and guaranteed.especially of its political leaders because that is how democracies act,” he notes in his article.
He also stressed that Spain has welcomed Edmundo González, the opposition leader and presumed winner of the elections, in a decision that “responds to a humanitarian and political need but goes beyond being a one-off response and is the expression of our ongoing commitment to the rights of the brotherly people of Venezuela.”
For the minister, The destiny of Venezuela must be decided by Venezuelans in peace and freedom.
“Only they, through dialogue, will choose their future, but in Spain they have and will always have a friendly country and a sister nation to accompany them on that path,” he says.
