The MP for Diego Martin Central, Symon de Nobriga, says he is satisfied with the ongoing works to address the recent partial collapse of the Morne Coco Road in Petit Valley.

De Nobriga told Guardian Media yesterday that he visited the site after a video was posted to social media showing that part of the roadway had caved in, spurring concerns about drivers potentially being cut off.

“I saw the videos that would have shown the area that collapsed; I went there after speaking with the Minister of Works and Transport and also the MP for Diego Martin North/East, Colm Imbert because the Morne Coco Road is the boundary between Diego Martin Central and Diego Martin North/East.”

De Nobriga confirmed that infrastructure works are conducted annually along the ravine, and while contractors were operating, the erosion occurred in an area that had previously been compromised.

He said both he and Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan responded and were confident in the efforts taken to reduce further instances of slippage. “The contractor did all the works that were required to shore up the area when I got there this morning (Sunday); the waterway was dry and the shoring was there. Traffic continues to be able to pass; I have not gotten timelines as yet for the full repair, but the works are ongoing.”

De Nobriga suspected that recent rainfall exacerbated the landslip.

“It just happened because of the water they had seen in the ravine over the last few days; the area behind there eroded, and that section of the pavement and piece of the river wall itself broke away.”

De Nobriga also said he has spoken with both the Director of Drainage and the Director of Highways at the Ministry of Works to try to resolve the matter expeditiously.
