Edmundo González and Machado thank the Senate of Colombia
Edmundo González and María Corina Machado thanked the Colombian Senate on Wednesday for approving the resolution in which it urges the president of that country, Gustavo Petro, to recognize the opposition leader as president-elect of Venezuela.
«Thank you to the Senate of Colombia for this recognition. Defending the popular sovereignty expressed on July 28 is the task of all democrats. “We keep moving forward!” González said on social media X.
In another message, the leader expressed:
«The Colombian Senate approved the recognition of Edmundo González as the president-elect of Venezuela and urges the Colombian government to do so. More and more parliaments are supporting Venezuelans in defense of popular sovereignty expressed on July 28 and the transition to democracy.”
He added that Venezuelans are grateful to the senators and political forces of Colombia who promoted and supported the decision.
“Venezuela will be free,” Machado said.

Gustavo Petro will “study” recognizing Edmundo González
The President of Colombia announced that he will study the Senate’s proposal.
In his account of X, he stressed: “So that public opinion is not confused. The Congress of Colombia, by constitutional order, “cannot demand positions from the president on international policy.”

The document, approved with 48 votes, urges Gustavo to “publicly recognize the true winners” in the presidential elections on July 28. According to the congressmen, Nicolás Maduro was not the winner of the elections.
“The recognition of the legitimate results is not only a sign of support for democracy in the region, but also an action consistent with the principles of Colombia’s foreign policy, committed to the defense of human rights and the rule of law,” they added.
Last week, the Colombian House of Representatives also approved a similar proposal asking the president to recognize González Urrutia’s victory.
