Farmers Facing Eviction From State Lands Request More Time To Harvest Crops

Farmers occupying State lands near the Piarco International Airport, and who have been given notice to vacate lands effective June 11th 2021, are calling on both the Ministers of National Security and Agriculture, Land and Fisheries to grant them an extension in time so they can reap their produce and not leave empty-handed.

According to President of the Agricultural Society, Darryl Rampersad, although assurance was given by Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat that the matter would be addressed soon, the farmers who occupy the land are concerned about time running out.

Officials at the Airports Authority have requested that the farmers be removed from the area as their farming encourages flocks of birds to frequent the vicinity of the airport, which poses a number of concerns.

But one farmer says they have occupied the land for over 20 years and this has never been an issue.
