Fire breaks out on the Cabo Star for second time in a year

Six days before the anniversary of a fire in the engine room of the Cabo Star, which had previously caused a food crisis in Tobago, another fire broke out in the same compartment.

The Trinidad and Tobago Inter-Island Transport Service confirmed in a release that “an incident occurred on the vessel this morning.” They also stated that an investigation has been launched, and today’s sailing has been canceled.

Speaking to Guardian Media, Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago Chairman Lyle Alexander said he will provide more information once the investigation is completed. He mentioned that the fire was quickly brought under control.

“I don’t know what the cause is. We have no idea what it was. We were told there was a fire in the engine room, which was brought under control by the ship’s crew. We are waiting for the results of the investigation, and then we will go from there.”

He added that based on the investigation’s findings, the ship’s crew will inform the Port Authority when the vessel can resume service.

On August 26, 2023, a fire damaged cable inside one of the engine rooms. It took up to three weeks for the vessel to return to service. During that peroid, Tobago reportedly ran out of water, flour, beers, bread and animal feed as well as building materials.
