A five-member badminton left local shores over the past two days for the Costa Rican International Open Badminton which serves off Tuesday (September 10).

Chequeda Deboulet, who recently won a bronze medal and a silver medal at the Venezuelan International, is the lone senior player to have been selected to wear red, white, and black.

The other team members are Vishal Ramsubhag, the winner of the Under-19 division Carebaco Tournament, Ethan Ramcharan, an U-17 triple crown winner, Sumiya Karim, who claimed the U-15 bronze medal in the singles and a double gold medals in the boys’ doubles and mixed doubles, and Isabelle Waller an U-17 silver medallist in the ladies doubles.

Deboulet will be seeded second at the tournament but faces a competitive field from several top-ranked European players, such as France Romane Cloteaux Foucault, the tournament’s top-seeded player among many others. Coach Anil Seepaul said his player is well poised to secure a quarterfinal or semifinal position.

Deboulet, the top-ranked local player who has won multiple national titles, will be on a bye in the first round of the 32-field women’s singles contest. She will go straight to the round of 16 where a mouth-watering contest awaits her against the winner of the contest between Barbados’ Sahara Braithwaite and Maria Laura Lopez of Costa Rica.

Seepaul said Deboulet could also face some favourable results in the women’s doubles when she teams up with Priyanna Ramdhanie of Guyana.

There is also much hope for the juniors whose draw will take place today.

“The draw comes out today but we are hopeful of favourable results and podium finishes. As it is now, it looks promising that we can seal at least three titles from the U-17 boys where Ramcharan will campaign; the U-15 girls division which will feature Karim and others; and the boys U-19 category where Caribbean champion Ramsubhag will compete.

“I am also expecting us to cop some medals and titles in the doubles,” Seepaul said.

Meanwhile, the pair of Ramsubhag and Karim will use the action there to prepare for the Junior World Championships in China at the end of the month. Action at the junior worlds will begin in the doubles.
