The Geriatric Society of T&T (GSTT) yesterday honoured former finance minister Winston Dookeran and former national security minister Brigadier General Carl Alfonso for their contribution to this country.

The 34th commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons will focus on the theme Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.

Dr Lavanya Thendavada, GSTT president, reminded the nation that the GSTT was launched last October, urging individuals to step forward and support the elderly population.

Father Martin Sirju, who is a director of the GSTT, emphasised the importance of a holistic approach to care, stating it not only heals the psychological state of mind but also enhances mental and physical health. The GSTT recognised Brigadier General Alfonso and Dookeran for their enduring dedication to the country and its society.

Dookeran, an economist and politician (founder and leader of the Congress of the People), highlighted that criticising the nation is inconsequential. Instead, he called for prioritising stronger, more inclusive communities that address the needs of older people.

He emphasised that younger generations should learn from the first-hand experiences of the elderly to gain valuable perspectives. Brigadier General Alfonso, a former minister of national security, echoed the need for faith and prayer during challenging times.

He noted that ageing has brought him mental clarity, allowing him to embrace the process gracefully. This day serves as a reminder that every individual matters. Volunteering with the GSTT programme fosters connections across generations, ensuring the elderly feel valued while promoting an inclusive society where all ages can thrive.
