October 15 & 19-20, 2024

Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS), a leading nonprofit youth development and community sailing organization, will host its 15th annual Sailing for Scholars Gala and Regatta in New York City on October 15 and 19-20.

The gala will be held in the Model Room of the New York Yacht Club on October 15 and will honor Noreen Doyle, President & CEO of the Hudson River Park Trust. Doyle has championed direct access to the Hudson River, working with local communities and organizational partners to expand in water programming and environmental research. During the two-day regatta beginning October 19 at the Dyckman Marina in Inwood, sailing teams will compete both on the water and to raise funds.

All proceeds from Sailing for Scholars directly support HRCS’s innovative youth development and maritime access programs, including Sail Academy, a multi-year program that uses sailing and boat-building to teach math, science, and leadership to middle and high school students, and Adaptive Sailing, a program HRCS launched in 2021 that provides waterfront access, sailing education, and community building to New Yorkers living with physical and developmental disabilities.

Sail Academy teaches students concepts on land and water using small-group, experiential learning. The program includes internships, where students learn every aspect of running a commercial sailing school, as well as vital college access programming and networking opportunities. For the Adaptive Sailing program, HRCS works with experts in the fields of sailing, adaptive design, and outdoor recreation to provide specialized equipment and expert instruction for program participants.

“We are thrilled to celebrate 15 years of the Sailing for Scholars Gala and Regatta, a milestone that reflects our commitment to empowering youth through sailing and education,” said HRCS Executive Director Robert Burke. “This year, we honor Noreen Doyle for her tireless advocacy for accessible waterfront programming, which aligns perfectly with our mission. Every dollar raised during this event will directly support our programs, ensuring that all New Yorkers have the chance to learn, grow, and thrive on the water.”

The 2024 Sailing for Scholars schedule includes:

  • Tuesday, October 15 – Gala and Silent Auction – HRCS will host its gala at the Model Room of the New York Yacht Club. There will be cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a unique silent auction, and remarks from HRCS students. Noreen Doyle will be honored. This year’s silent auction features a private sailing lesson with one of the biggest names in American sailing: World Champion sailor Mike Buckley of the United States SailGP team. Bidders can also win homestays in Nantucket and Shelter Island, Rangers and Giants tickets, tickets for the Cocoa and Carols Holiday Cruise with Classic Harbor Line, and other exciting sailing and non-sailing items. You can purchase gala tickets here, and bid on auction items here.
