Isabel Díaz Ayuso after the exile of Edmundo González Urrutia:

  • Sep, Mon, 2024

Following the arrival of former candidate Edmundo González Urrutia to Spain, the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, asked for “full support” for opposition leader María Corina Machado in Venezuela and asserted that “it will not be good for anyone” for the country to continue with the current political crisis.

“I remember two things: nothing other than ending the dictatorship of (Nicolás) Maduro will be good for anyone; and second, I ask for all support for María Corina Machado, who now remains as a beacon of light and freedom for the people of Venezuela. I do not want anyone to forget that the beacon of freedom is right now in Spain and also in Venezuela, in the hands of the two leaders,” said Díaz Ayuso at an informative breakfast organized by Nueva Economía Fórum.

She said that González Urrutia, whom she described as “good and generous,” arrived in Spain “after weeks of threats and persecution.” “I don’t want to imagine the pressure he has been under in recent days to have made this decision,” she said, while “wishing him and his family the best.”

Díaz Ayuso stressed that in the elections of July 28, “the Venezuelan people, with almost 8 million people in exile, with all the difficulties and traps they have had to vote, have been able to crush Nicolás Maduro at the polls.”

He added that “not even the dictator’s allies in the Sao Paulo Forum support this friend of Podemos and some members of the Spanish government.”.

He highlighted the petition of more than 30 former Ibero-American leaders to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the arrest of Maduro and his associates.

During his speech on Monday, he criticized the Spanish government, led by Pedro Sánchez, for the delay “in recognizing the victory of Edmundo González while the former president (José Luis Rodríguez) Zapatero did not hesitate to go and support the dictatorship.”

Following the arrival of González Urrutia to Spain, Congress decided to debate this Tuesday, September 10, a proposal to recognize the results of the July 28 elections presented by the Venezuelan opposition.
