Johnson, Lewis top Schools 5k run

Kayamba Johnson and Shian Lewis sped to the boys’ and girls’ titles in the Secondary Schools Track and Field Middle Distance League North Region Hill (5K)Run which started and ended at the St Augustine Secondary School on Friday.

Johnson of Blanchisseuse Secondary was the overall winner in a time of 19 minutes and 17 seconds in the 5K which featured 192 participants from 16 schools. In close second was schoolmate Ozia Danclair with 19.27 to finish one-two in the Under-17 age-group and third, was Arima Central Secondary’s Mikael Serrette, the boys’ U-15 age-group winner, in 19.30.

Filling the top five spots was Darreon Thom (U-17) of Toco Secondary with 21.42 in fourth and Bates Memorial High’s Terrel Hernandez (U-17) with 23.19.

Lewis of Success Laventille Secondary was the clear winner in the girls’ category with a 23-57 clocking. The girls’ U-17 age-group winner, who is the reigning U-17 1,500m bronze medallist and national junior netballer, placed seventh overall.

It was a battle for the runner-up spot but girls’ U-15 age-group winner Nyla Kerr of San Juan South crossed in 24.54.72 ahead of Leah De Freitas (U-15) of St Joseph’s Convent Port-of-Spain, who settled for third with 25.03.

Arya Siewrattan (U-17) of St Joseph’s Convent (PoS) and Sarah Rogers, the girls’ 17-plus winner of Malabar Secondary, were fourth and fifth in 27.28 and 29.13, respectively.

In the team results, St Augustine Secondary emerged as the top school with 60 points, followed by Holy Cross College in second place with 44 and third, St Joseph’s Convent (PoS) with 39.
