Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado denounced this Thursday that Jesús Manuel Medina Martínez, one of the hundreds of detainees after the controversial re-election of Nicolás Madurodied due to the “inhuman conditions” in which he was held in dungeons in the state of Anzoátegui.

In a statement, Machado expressed his deep pain over the death, at the “hands of the regime,” of Medina, whom he described as a “brave Venezuelan” who, in addition to being a “father, musician and composer,” was a member of his party – Vente Venezuela – and participated as an electoral witness in the July 28 elections.

Machado on the death of Jesús Martínez Medina

«One more crime by Maduro and his regime. He died at their hands, he died because of the inhumane conditions in which he was held captive. They took Jesús for exercising a right and a citizen’s duty,” said the former deputy, who expressed solidarity with the activist’s family.

In the text, the opponent explained that after his arrest by agents of the “Sebin (Bolivarian National Intelligence Service)”, Medina, who suffered from type 2 diabetes and suffered from a “heart problem”, was taken to “subhuman” cells, where “He was severely mistreated and was in such poor hygienic conditions that he had necrosis in both legs,” which is why he was requested to be transferred to a hospital.

However, he continued, “for months, they denied him any medical attention, claiming that they needed permission from his superiors in Caracas” and, “finally, after so much time and complaints, he was transferred to the Luis Razetti hospital,” where the doctors, ” When they saw the state in which Jesus was, they decided that they should amputate both of his legs,” but “in the middle of the procedure, this morning, he died.”

They hold the State responsible for this death

Parties and leaders of the majority opposition – grouped in the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – condemned the incident through messages on social networks, and held the State responsible for this death.

On Sunday, the PUD denounced “the lack of medical care” in this case, while recalling that “denying” health care to a prisoner “is a violation of human rights and entails individual responsibility for those who must provide it.” .

The Executive has not established a position on Medina’s death or on the accusations of the opponents and organizations that reported the case.

After the PUD assured that there was fraud in the presidential elections, whose official result is not recognized by many countries, a crisis was unleashed marked by protests and police operations that resulted in 2,400 arrests, according to the Executive, although NGOs have verified 1,848 cases, among them that of Medina.
