Diosdado Cabello will be the new Minister of the Interior of Venezuela, a position he held 22 years ago, President Nicolás Maduro announced almost a month after his questioned re-election.

“I have decided to incorporate the Bolivarian captain Diosdado Cabello into the government as the new Minister of People’s Power for the Interior, Justice and Peace,” Maduro said in a speech.

“Diosdado brings luck, he knows a lot about peace, he knows a lot about justice,” said Maduro, who highlighted Cabello’s ability to “consolidate peace” in the face of “so much conspiracy.”

What changes have occurred in Maduro’s executive cabinet?

Vice President Delcy Rodríguez will simultaneously assume the strategic role of the Oil Ministry, Maduro announced when announcing changes in his cabinet.

Rodríguez was confirmed as vice president, but handed over the Ministry of Finance, which she also headed, to Anabel Pereira Fernández.

At today’s event, Maduro also ratified Foreign Minister Yván Gil, as well as ministers such as Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López, the member of the Executive with the longest tenure in the post.

Oil Minister Pedro Tellechea, who also headed the state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), has moved to the Ministry of Industry. PDVSA will be headed by his current vice president, Héctor Obregón.

Other changes in the executive cabinet

After eight years at the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land, Wilmar Castro Soteldo leaves this office, which is now taken over by Menry Fernández, “a man who likes to walk and travel the fields,” said the head of State. He asked him to review the agreements with the peasant sector and convene the third National Peasant Congress, it was indicated in VTV.

Leticia Gómez will take over the Ministry of Tourism. “I thank my colleague Alí Padrón for his work during this time.” Anabel Pereira Fernández has been appointed to the Ministry of Finance and Foreign Trade, “to integrate the economic team with comprehensive strength,” said Maduro.

The Ministry for Youth is separated from the Ministry of Sport. The former will be assumed by Grecia Colmenares, and the latter by Arnaldo Sánchez.

Eduardo Piñate was appointed to the Ministry for the Social Work Process, while Magaly Viña takes over the Ministry for Older Adults and Grandfathers and Grandmothers of the Nation.

The portfolio of Education and Vice President for Social and Territorial Socialism will be assumed by the governor of Miranda state, Héctor Rodríguez.
