Maduro’s government calls EU statement “dirty”

  • Aug, Sat, 2024

The government of Nicolás Maduro accused this Saturday the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, of supporting a «fascist coup d’état»after publishing what Caracas calls a «dirty communication» in which he claims that the “necessary public evidence” has not been provided to declare Nicolás Maduro re-elected president.

In response, the Venezuelan government said that these statements “sink that block again into the putrid mud,” in addition to showing the “hatred and complex of this officialwho at the end of his term and under instructions from the United States of America intends to show his interventionist and neocolonial conduct, supporting a fascist coup d’état” in the country.

In a statement, the Maduro administration warned the EU that its “continued disrespect for the sovereignty and independence of Venezuela and its public powers” could turn into “a new leap into the void that will significantly affect diplomatic, political and economic relations”.

In this regard, he assured that “he will not tolerate any senseless act that violates the principles enshrined in the Constitution and international law, and will appeal to the Bolivarian, anti-colonial and anti-imperialist doctrine that inspired the struggles that expelled the European empires from the sacred soil of the homeland more than 200 years ago.”

Maduro’s government demands respect from the EU

The Chavista government demanded “respect for its integrity” and urged the EU to “refrain from expressing any opinion on matters that are the exclusive concern of Venezuelans.”

In a statement on behalf of the EU, Borrell said on Saturday that “only complete and independently verifiable results will be accepted and recognised to ensure that the will of the Venezuelan people is respected.”

To date, the statement said, Venezuelan authorities have “not provided the public evidence necessary to evaluate the electoral process according to the standards set by the UN panel of experts.”

Specifically, the interim report of this United Nations Group of Experts, invited by the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, “has highlighted the lack of justification for the announced results”said.

The EU bloc again urged the electoral body to “publish and independently verify the official voting records of all centres.”

Despite Maduro’s announced victory, the main opposition coalition – the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – insists on the “victory” of its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia, based on “83.5% of the records” that it claims to have obtained through people who were witnesses and members of the table during the election day.
