A 51-year-old man narrowly escaped a robbery attempt at the Foreshore Lookout, Mucurapo, on Tuesday night, after exchanging gunfire with his attackers.

The man was seated in his vehicle with two female companions around 9.30 pm, when a white Nissan Tiida drove into the location and stopped nearby. Three men exited the Tiida, two armed with firearms, and approached his vehicle. Fearing for his safety and that of his friends, the man drew his licensed pistol and engaged the gunmen, who immediately returned fire. He sustained a minor graze wound to his right calf during the exchange.

The attackers fled and the victim reported the incident at the St James Police Station. Police officers found the suspected getaway vehicle, a white Nissan Tiida (PDA 5603), abandoned and facing east in the westbound lane of the Audrey Jeffers Highway. Blood was found on the rear passenger-side door.

Despite a search by members of the Western Division Task Force, Marine and Coastal Patrol Unit, the T&T Coast Guard and other units, no suspects were found. Crime scene investigators PC Chandler and WPC Plentie, of the Western Division Crime Scene Unit, processed the area, while Sgt Panchu also visited the scene.

The victim received medical treatment at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital and was discharged.

St James CID officer PC Sheppard is continuing investigations.
