Rishi Motilal has appeared in court charged with the murder of his estranged common-law wife and their 14-month-old baby.

The 29-year-old construction worker was denied bail after appearing before Master Shabiki Cazabone in South Court A, facing charges for the murders of his baby girl, Shermaya Jada Motilal, and her mother, 34-year-old Tara Ramsaroop, on 8 October.

They allegedly suffered fatal injuries in his home on Rig Road, Rochard Road, Barrackpore. Ramsaroop had an eight-year-old boy with the suspect, who was at school at the time of the murders.

An autopsy revealed that baby Jada suffered a chop across her neck, while her mother sustained multiple chops to her body. It is alleged that the suspect also burnt a vehicle valued at $45,000 on Ramsubad Road in Barrackpore.

The police arrested the suspect sometime after the murders on Tuesday and charged him on Thursday, following advice from Deputy DPP Sabrina Jaglal. He was called upon to enter a plea regarding the murder charges and the malicious damage charge. His duty counsel was attorney Marc Bahadoorsingh.

PC Jaggernauth, representing the prosecution, indicated that the file currently comprises 12 statements, with 13 statements still outstanding. Master Cazabon ordered that the file be sent to the DPP by 10 January for a state attorney to be appointed. A sufficiency hearing was tentatively set for 7 October. However, the accused is expected to reappear before the court on 10 January to indicate whether he has secured an attorney to represent him.
