Man killed by falling tree

A good deed ended in tragedy yesterday, after a man who was cutting a tree with a group of friends died when the tree fell on him.

The victim was identified as Ansley Joseph, 55, of Enterprise, Chaguanas.

Police reported that Elison Hislop, 31, of Enterprise, Chaguanas, a soldier attached to Tetron Barracks, along with Joseph and Kevin Roberts, 43, of Peytonville, Arima, went to the property of Natalie Nichols, located at Elvira Drive, Valencia, to clear away some trees and bushes.

However, while Joseph was cutting a tree it fell on him, causing serious injuries. He was taken to the Arima Hospital for treatment in his vehicle, where he subsequently succumbed from his injuries.

Cpl Paponette, PC Leigertwood, WPC Kheerai Roopnarine and CSI PC Gualbance visited the scene.

Brother chops brother in dispute over food

A family dispute in Mafeking Village, Mayaro, escalated into violence, when a man attacked his brother with a cutlass during an argument over food.

The incident occurred at 7.20 pm on Thursday.

The altercation began at a home on Cedar Grove Road, where the two brothers, aged 45 and 43, were arguing, when the younger sibling allegedly inflicted several chop wounds on the victim while threatening to kill him. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack.

The injured man was taken to the Mayaro District Hospital by a relative, where he was treated for multiple lacerations, including deep cuts to his forehead, chest, and shoulder. He was kept under observation before being discharged.

The incident was reported to the Mayaro CID and officers responded promptly, interviewing the victim and relatives, who provided key information. Two statements were recorded and a medical certificate was obtained.

Despite efforts by police, the suspect remains at large.

Crime scene investigators are expected to visit the location to collect evidence as inquiries continue.

Man arrested for having pepper spray

A 34-year-old man was arrested in the Arima police district for possessing pepper spray, which remains a prohibited weapon.

The arrest took place during a roving police exercise conducted between 10 am and 1.30 pm in the Northern Division on Friday.

The operation was led by senior officers and coordinated by ASPs and inspectors, with officers from the Northern Division Task Force (NDTF) North carrying out the exercise.

The suspect, a resident of Lawrence Wong Road in Longdenville, Chaguanas, was detained after being found with the illegal item.

In separate incidents, police also issued six fixed penalty notices for various offences and completed 17 field interview forms.

The exercise concluded without any incidents.
