“The European Parliament recognises Edmundo González Urrutia as the elected president of Venezuela. Thank you, Europe!” wrote Machado on X, after the resolution was approved with 309 votes in favour, 201 against and 12 abstentions.
The text also recognizes her as “leader of the democratic forces.”

Maduro and his hitmen tried to torpedo the vote with a dirty extortion maneuver.
They have failed.
The commitment to truth, democracy and human rights has prevailed.
A great day for Venezuela, yes.
But also for Europe. https://t.co/xhEh9IFeZv

González Urrutia, exiled in Madrid since September 8, thanked the European Parliament for the recognition and asked the European Union to act to ensure that the popular will is respected in Venezuela.
“It is time to ask Europe to do everything in its power to help Venezuela to uphold the sovereignty expressed at the ballot box,” he said in a video posted on his social networks.
The European Parliament resolution also calls on the International Criminal Court to include in its investigations human rights violations and arbitrary detentions in Venezuela. The National Electoral Council proclaimed Maduro president without publishing detailed results, as required by law.
The main opposition coalition has denounced fraud, claiming that González Urrutia won the election, based on 83.5% of the electoral records he published on the Internet.
The Maduro regime believes that these records are “false”, even though they were observed by a panel of UN experts invited by the National Electoral Council.
Thank you! We Venezuelans want the same thing that Europeans have achieved: to live in freedom and democracy.
As President-elect, I thank the European Parliament for this recognition that transcends me; it is the recognition of the sovereign will of the people of Venezuela… pic.twitter.com/QIwP4kZNw4
