Meloni will meet with Milei: will they talk about Venezuela?
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, will travel to Buenos Aires this Tuesday to meet the day after with the Argentine president, Javier Milei, and participate in events such as receiving the keys to the capital.
Meloni will speak with Milei about the “main international issues”, such as the conclusions of the G20 summit and the crisis in Venezuela.
The Italian Prime Minister will undertake this two-day trip after attending the G20 summit in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, government sources inform Efe.
Tomorrow’s session, Wednesday, will begin with the delivery of a wreath of flowers at the José de San Martín monument and then he will go to the Casa Rosada to meet with Milei, after which it is expected that both offer a press conference.
In the afternoon, at the Italian Institute of Culture in Buenos Aires, the Italian president will be awarded the honorary keys to the capital by Mayor Jorge Macri.
Finally, Meloni will travel to the nearby Teatro Coliseo to attend a tribute to Italian cinema and there he will offer a farewell speech before returning to Rome.
It is Meloni’s first official mission to Argentina and Latin America since he came to power in October 2022 and, according to sources, “will allow us to deepen the solid bilateral partnership” between both countries, marked by “very deep” historical and cultural ties.
So much so that in Argentina lives the largest Italian community abroad, which exceeds one million people, and with a large part of the population with Italian ancestors.
Politics has been seen on three other occasions with Milei, all this year, and in June he invited the Argentine president to participate in the Italian G7 summit.
At the bilateral meeting in Buenos Aires, priority sectors of cooperation between both countries will be “explored”, with special interest in collaborating in matters of justice and security, especially in the fight against international organized crime.
From an economic point of view, the sources add, the objective is to strengthen commercial links that “already have a high growth potential” thanks to the more than 300 Italian companies that employ more than 16,000 people in Argentina and that generate around 3,000 million euros.
Of particular interest on the Italian side are the energy sectors, as well as IT, precision mechanics, infrastructure and the food industry..
