Men’s sprint relay team into World U-20 final

T&T men’s 4×100 metres relay team has qualified for the finals of the World Under-20 Track and Field Championships at the Estadio Atletico de la Videna in Lima, Peru.

The quartet of Che Wickham, Kadeem Chinapoo, Hakeem Chinapoo, and Dylan Woodruffe combined to clock a season’s best 39.77 seconds to finish second in the fourth heat in the preliminary round Friday.

T&T ended behind Jamaica (39.54) and ahead of Nigeria (40.38), Denmark (40.34) and Mexico (40.44).

The Jamaicans clocked the fastest time ahead of heat-three winner Thailand (39.56) and Japan (39.71), winner of heat one. The Thais and Japanese set new national records. France (39.73) and Great Britain (39.75) were quicker than local men. Australia (39.80) and Hong Kong (39.97) also qualified for the final which is set for tomorrow at 6.50 pm.

The 4x100m men will be seeking to win this country’s third medal at the World U-20 Championships. T&T’s copped bronze in 2002 and 2010.

T&T last qualified for the final at the 2018 edition in Tampere, Finland and copped seventh place in 39.87.

Earlier, the men’s 4x400m runners finished 14th quickest in the first round. Joshua Perry, Daeshun Cole, Dorian Charles, and Kyrell Thomas teamed up to clocked 3:11.67 to cross the line fifth in heat three behind Japan (3:07.04), India (3:08.10), Botswana (3:08.98) and Qatar (3:11.45). Brazil (3:12.68) was sixth.

Perry ran the lead-off leg and handed over the baton in the fourth spot to Cole. Perry was timed in 48.65. Cole remained in fourth clocking the fastest leg by the local men in 47.17. Third-leg runner Charles ran 48.20 to keep the squad in fourth. Thomas returned a split of 47.65 but was passed by the Qatar anchor leg to finish in fifth.

The USA clocked the fastest time (3:05.16) ahead of Japan and India.

Jamaica (3:11.30) was 10th best with Guyana in 11th (3:11.36) despite setting a national record.

T&T’s women’s 4x100m sprinters Kenniyah Guishard-Yearwood, Janae De Gannes, Akira Malaver, and Alexxe Henry were initially sixth in heat two but were later disqualified for passing the baton out of the zone at the second change-over between De Gannes and Malaver. The USA won the heat with 44.22 ahead of Australia (44.76) and Poland (45.00).

Two-time defending champion Jamaica registered the fastest time (43.81) overall ahead of USA and Australia.

Cheyne West (Abilene Wildcats) ended in 19th in the men’s 400m hurdles semifinals.

Competing in the third and final semifinal heat, West crossed the line in seventh spot in 53.09. The national senior men’s 400m hurdles runner-up, who started in lane three, was lagging behind the leaders coming into the final turn. Despite pressing over the final two hurdles, he could not surpass his rivals on the final straight.

Jamaican Daniel Wright won the race, easing up as he crossed the line in 51.11. Chile’s Ramon Fuenzalida was second in 51.33. Both secured lanes in today’s medal race. Kari Gondo of Japan (51.80), Mexican Jose Eduardo Aguado (52.57), Brazilian Lucas de Ameida (53.67) and USA’s Premier Wynn (52.76) all finished ahead of West, who set a personal best time of 52.18 in the first round on Wednesday.

Finland’s Antti Sanio (49.36), Chezchian Michal Rada (49.36) and Vance Nilson of the USA) 49.82 were the top qualifiers.
