Met Service to activate Yellow Level Hazardous Seas Alert tonight

North-eastern exposed coastal areas of Trinidad and Tobago will go under a Yellow Level Hazardous Seas Alert from 8pm today and remain under that alert status until noon on Monday, October 7.

An advisory issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service is urging persons living in those particular areas to be vigilant and monitor conditions closely, which will be impacted by an active hurricane in the mid-Atlantic.

“All marine interests should monitor near-shore/coastal sea conditions and exercise caution along affected areas,” the Met Service said in its advisory.

In addition, people in those areas should, “avoid marine activities,” and “continue to monitor updates from official sites”, such as the websites and social media platforms for the Met Service and the ODPM.

According to the advisory, the near-shore north-facing coastal areas of both islands will be affected by “long period north-easterly swells”.

“These swells are being generated by Hurricane Kirk located in the Mid Atlantic Ocean,” the Met Service explained.

Among the expected impacts:

“Battering waves at the affected shorelines, which can be exacerbated at high tides. Near-shore activities (fishing, sea-bathing, mooring of boats, etc.) can be adversely affected.”
