More $$$ To Fight White Collar Crime
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service will be given more resources to assist in the fight against white-collar crime.
Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert, made the announcement as he outlined budgetary allocations for the Ministry of National Security for fiscal 2021 which totaled $5.227 billion.
Minister Imbert said the National Security landscape has been significantly strengthened in the past year, and positive results are beginning to show. He mentioned increased resources to the Financial Investigation Branch to fight money laundering and white-collar crime.
The Finance Minister also revealed that a specialised multi-agency border port interdiction unit is being formed while more resources will go towards the expansion of the Riverine and Coastal Patrol Unit to provide greater deployment and coverage along swamps, rivers and seas.
Projects earmarked for fiscal 2021 include the construction of a new Police Headquarters to allow for better operational planning and management of daily policing activities – this has already been designed.
The Special Victims Department, which consists of the Child Protection Unit, the Gender Based Violence Unit, and the Sexual Offences Unit, will also be equipped with new offices.
