MP affirms that Jesús Martínez Medina had medical attention

This Friday, the Public Ministry (MP) issued a statement regarding the death of Jesús Martínez Medinadetained during the post-election protests, and stated that he received medical attention in Anzoátegui for suffering from type II diabetes.

According to the information, Martínez was admitted to the Luis Razetti Medical Center since October 11. Furthermore, they assured that during that time “had proper medical attention. And he was given the medications and other treatments that his health condition warranted.”

The organization highlighted that both the Prosecutor’s Office and other competent institutions guaranteed respect for due process and other constitutional rights, such as health care. This is both in the case of Martínez Medina and in that of other detainees after the July 28 elections.

The case of Jesús Martínez Medina has raised attention due to the situation of political prisoners in Venezuela and their prison conditions. The complaints about lack of access to adequate medical care and other basic rights are recurrent by human rights organizations and relatives of the detainees.

In parallel, Attorney General Tarek William Saab reported on the review of measures for 225 detainees related to post-election protests.

Saab assured that the Public Ministry and the Judiciary acted in accordance with the rule of law and respect for human rights, although relatives of the detainees have repeatedly denounced obstacles in the defense of the accused.
