MPs to join NALIS in promoting literacy in T&T
Youngsters across the country will be treated to readings by Members of Parliament and other prominent persons in society at various public and community libraries throughout Trinidad and Tobago, as the country commemorates International Literacy Day 2024.
The initiative is being led by National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS), in collaboration with the Communications Ministry in the Office of the Prime Minister.
A release from NALIS says the day’s events will begin at 9:30am tomorrow (Wednesday, September 4, 2024), when Planning & Development Minister Penelope Beckles-Robinson, the Member of Parliament for Arima, does a reading at the Arima Public Library situated at #31 Pro Queen Street, Arima.
Minister Beckles-Robinson is a strong advocate for reading and literacy skills. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, she encouraged parents and teachers and the children in their care to work hard to overcome the challenges the pandemic posed, especially with regard to children’s education during that period.
For International Literacy Day back in 2020, she had stated:
“From a very young age, my parents always instilled in me the value of having a good education. Today as we celebrate International Literacy Day, I want to stress the importance of reading and writing. These are key tools, not just in attaining an education but also for the progress and prosperity of our people and communities … Just as we have to eat every day to make our bodies healthy, we also have to learn every day to make our mind healthy.”
International Literacy Day is celebrated annually on September 8th to raise awareness about literacy challenges, locally and internationally.
The 2024 theme—“Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace”—highlights the pivotal role of literacy in fostering a more equitable, peaceful and sustainable society.
