Nicaragua is reportedly offering rewards to former combatants

  • Aug, Sat, 2024

The Nicaraguan government, led by President Daniel Ortega, offered $5,000 to former combatants who travel to Venezuela to support the government of Nicolás Maduro in the event of a “hypothetical civil war scenario,” according to a publication by the Nicaraguan media 100% News on August 28th.

According to Ortega, Colombia could be the scene of a Venezuelan “counterrevolution” due to the extensive border it shares with Venezuela, and where, the Central American leader pointed out, the United States has military bases.

“I want to alert Nicolás and I’m sure you have already thought about it, analyzed it and are prepared (…), as this maneuver has already failed for them (speaking of the opposition) and There is no turning back, there is no step back that Nicolás is the legitimate president“the Sandinista leader said during a virtual summit with heads of state of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) held on August 26.

Nicaragua is one of the few Latin American countries that recognized Nicolás Maduro as president-elect, despite the fact that the authorities of the National Electoral Council (CNE) have not yet presented the minutes of a process marked by arrests and various complaints from human rights organizations that they described as fraudulent.

«I am sure that just as thousands of fighters joined (foreigners) will also join thousands of Latin American and Caribbean fighters in the battle in Nicaragua against (Anastasio) Somoza (Debayle) in the defense of the Bolivarian revolution,” Ortega added during his speech at the summit.

The Nicaraguan president extended his congratulations to Nicolás Maduro after the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela (TSJ), controlled by magistrates close to Chavez, confirmed that the results of the July 28 elections gave victory to Nicolás Maduro.

Other countries that recognized the favorable result for Nicolás Maduro are: Bolivia, Honduras, Cuba, Iran, China and Russia.

Ortega attacks presidents of Colombia and Brazil

Colombian President Gustavo Petro reacted to Daniel Ortega’s accusations, calling him “dragged” by his position regarding seeking a “peaceful and democratic” solution for Venezuela.

“Daniel Ortega has called us (the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Petro) ‘dragged’, just because We want a peaceful and democratic negotiated solution in Venezuela (…) at least I do not drag the human rights of the people of my country and even less those of my comrades in arms and in the fight against dictatorships,” the Colombian president expressed on the social network X on August 27.

Presidents who do not recognize Nicolás Maduro’s victory

After the results were announced, where the CNE declared Nicolás Maduro the winner with 52% of the votes, leaders of countries such as Chile and Argentina rejected the announcement and demanded transparency and truthfulness in the electoral process in favor of democracy in Venezuela.

“Argentina will not admit to another fraud and expects the Armed Forces to defend democracy and the popular will this time”was the message from Argentine President Javier Milei published on the social network X (formerly Twitter), while Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared that the results “are hard to believe” and called for transparency of the minutes and international observation not compromised by the Maduro government.
