Osmary Sánchez, pregnant detained in protests in Venezuela, receives precautionary measures from the IACHR
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures to Osmary Gabriela Sánchez Chirinos, detained in Venezuelaafter considering that his life, personal integrity and health are at risk.
Sánchez, pregnant and arrested on August 7, 2024 on charges of terrorism and instigation of hatred, has not received adequate medical care.
In addition, he was prevented from seeing his lawyers and faces psychological torture, according to the application filed. The Venezuelan State did not offer information about the case.
The IACHR highlighted that his arrest is part of “operation tun tun”, directed against people critical of the regime after the July 2024 elections.
The Commission requested that Venezuela protect Sánchez’s rights, guaranteeing his medical care, adequate detention conditions, and the investigation of the events that led to his arrest.
Inadequate detention conditions for Osmary Sánchez

After analyzing the factual and legal allegations and in the terms of Article 25 of the Regulations, the IACHR decided to grant the precautionary measure and request the State of Venezuela to (1) adopt the necessary measures to protect the rights to life, personal integrity and health of Osmary Gabriela Sánchez Chirinos, with a gender perspective, in accordance with applicable international standards, and (2) implement the necessary measures so that her detention conditions adapt to applicable international standards. In particular, ensuring that the corresponding medical diagnoses and the definition of your medical treatment are made.
It also urged him to (3) agree on the measures to be adopted with the beneficiary and her representatives and (4) report on the actions taken in order to investigate the alleged events that gave rise to this resolution and thus avoid their repetition.
