The Road Safety Observatory counted (OSV) at least 238 traffic accidents in September, when 130 people died: 104 men and 26 women, while another 312 people suffered injuries, for a total of 442 affected for a road incident.

He OSV reviewed a total of 289 press releases during that month: 104 reports mentioned road events with deaths; 155 notes, injured people, and another 30 publications indicated deaths and injuries.

The database for the report was created thanks to the alliance with the ZOOM FOUNDATION.

According to the facts aggregated by the OSV, motorized vehicles occupied the first place in the number of deaths, which represented 37.5% of the cases collected, followed by pedestrians (17%), grillers (13%), drivers of vehicles (12%), vehicle occupants and bus passengers (8%) and cyclists (5%).

Of the injured, the OSV counted 205 men and 96 women. The victims were mainly motorists, vehicle occupants and grillers.

Entities and circulation routes by OSV

Of the 238 road events recorded by the OSV in September, the state of Bolívar was the entity with the highest number of traffic accidents. Of the 238 road incidents, this region represented 15.12% of the cases collected by the OSV, followed by Falcón, with 59.5%; Merida, 9.24%; Miranda, 9.24%; Táchira, 8.40%; Carabobo, 8.40%; Barinas, 7.56%; Aragua, 6.72%; Zulia, 4.20%; Capital District, 3.36%; Yaracuy, 2.94%; Monagas, 2.52%; Lara, 2.52%; Portuguese, 2.10%; Delta Amacuro, 2.10%; Anzoategui. 1.26%; Cojedes, 1.26%; Nueva Esparta, 1;26%; La Guaira, 0.84%, and Sucre, 0.42%.

The OSV statistics specified that the largest number of events occurred on avenues, followed by streets, highways, secondary roads, trunk roads, national roads, distributors, bridges, intersections, flasks and local roads.

Accidents due to speeding occurred mostly on avenues; streets; highways, secondary roads, national roads, trunks and distributors.

The events where a police investigation is presumed occurred on avenues, streets, highways, and secondary roads. national highways, bridges, intersections and local roads.

Incompetence as a possible cause of the accident took place on avenues, streets, highways, secondary roads, trunk roads, distributors, bridges and intersections.

Regarding alleged mechanical failures, press reviews reported that the accidents occurred on avenues, streets, highways, secondary roads and local roads.

As a consequence of alcohol consumption, the press highlighted that the accidents occurred on avenues and highways.

Only one press release indicated that the poor condition of the road caused the traffic accident, as well as two cases of practicing motorcycle pirouettes on avenues and streets.

Types and causes of traffic accidents

During September, the OSV totaled at least 65 traffic accidents in the category of simple crashes, 48 run overs, 41 collisions, 35 skids (cases that directly involve motorized vehicles with or without grills), 25 crashes with fixed objects, 22 vehicle overturns and another 2 that left the tracks.

In at least 172 reviews, the press mentioned that the possible cause of the accidents had to do with excess speed (38.95%), followed by 44 events in which incompetence is presumed (25.58%), another 43 ( 25.00%) press reports in which it is presumed that there was police participation for an alleged investigation of the incident, another 11 cases due to mechanical failures (6.40%), 2 due to alcohol consumption while driving (1.16% ), 2 cases due to motorcycle pirouettes (1.16%) and a single incident due to poor condition of the roads (0.58%).

The OSV statistics also made it possible to analyze the causes with the forms of traffic accidents recorded during September. Below is a summary of the top positions:

Excess speed was mainly related to skids, simple crashes and runovers, multiple crashes and/or collisions, crashes with a fixed object and vehicle overturns.

The events in which a police investigation was presumed had to do with collisions, simple collisions, multiple collisions and/or collisions, vehicle overturns, collisions with a fixed object, collisions and skids.

Regarding mechanical failure as the cause of the accident and according to press reviews, it involved multiple crashes and/or collisions, skids, vehicle overturns, crashes with a fixed object, leaving the road, run over and a simple crash.

Regarding cases due to alcohol consumption, the press mentioned that the accidents were simple crashes and skids, a single case in which the practice of motorcycle pirouette had to do with a simple crash and another caused by skidding due to the poor condition of the road.

Vehicles involved in traffic accidents

In September, the OSV totaled 366 vehicles involved in traffic accidents throughout the country.

Motorcycles represented 44.81% of the cases collected, followed by cars (32.51%), vans (8.20%), cargo vehicles (7.10%), buses (4.10%), bicycles ( 2.46%), special vehicles (0.55%) and a minibus.

Days and hours of traffic accidents

Of the 238 traffic accidents recorded in September, the data showed that 121 (50.85%) events occurred from Monday to Thursday and 117 (49.16%) occurred on the weekend (Friday to Sunday).

In 62 press releases it is mentioned that 44 of the events were recorded in the morning, 65 in the afternoon, 47 at night and another 29 cases during the early morning.

On weekdays, accidents occurred in the morning and afternoon, while on weekends they occurred in the afternoon and evening.

The statistics also allowed us to determine that simple crashes, run overs, skids, multiple crashes and collisions; skids, collisions with fixed objects, overturns, falling of the person from the moving vehicle and vehicles that left the roads, were generated more frequently on weekdays (Monday to Thursday). The difference regarding weekends (Friday to Sunday) was minimal.

Regarding the causes of the accidents and the days of the week (Table 20, graph 18), the OSV determined that excessive speed had to do with events that occurred on weekends, with a minimal difference in terms of the days of the week. the week.

Traffic accidents in September, recorded from Monday to Thursday, occurred most frequently on avenues, streets, highways, secondary roads, trunk roads, national highways, distributors, bridges, intersections and local roads.

A minimal difference in cases recorded on weekends was evident, with the only observation that there were no events reported on local roads.

Final considerations

The data collected by the OSV is derived from the daily review of local and regional -digital- media, so it is an under-reporting of cases, considering that the number could be higher.

Regarding Caracas, Ángeles de las Vías and immediate response groups -although they report daily cases of accidents that directly involve motor vehicles (skids)-, these types of cases with little information and/or details of the events are not reported in local digital media .

This month (September), the OSV did not have access to the data on deaths from traffic accidents in the capital city due to the lack of reports, or the refusal of relatives of the victims when consulted at the Bello Monte morgue.

Among the NGOs on road issues, the OSV is the only one dedicated to monitoring and daily recording of traffic accidents in the country; However, it does not consider among its objectives to be an official source on related topics.

The OSV considers it necessary to implement road safety education programs and that such actions be repetitive and constant, and that they involve all sectors.
