Perenco Drills 3 New Development Wells in Colombia

Perenco Colombia has announced the successful drilling of three new development wells in the Paravare and Chaparrito fields on the plains of Casanare, onshore Colombia.

“As a result of detailed seismic data analysis by the geoscience team, Perenco identified new channels in which a large quantity of oil has been discovered,” the company said in a news release.

Perenco said the two wells on the Paravare field were aimed at increasing production, while the third well, PRV-03, was “successfully drilled and continues to be optimized”. After the installation of an electro-submersible centrifugal pump, PRV-03 now produces 500 barrels of oil per day (bopd).

Meanwhile, on the Chaparrito field, the company cited the success of the CHP-03 well, drilled in 2023 on the edge of a channel at a depth of 4,921 feet (1,500 meters). The volume of the channel discovered made it possible to drill two more wells in the same area, it said.

CHP-04 was drilled in the middle of the channel and CHP-05 was drilled in the northern portion. With production reaching 3,380 bopd and 550 bopd for CHP-04 and CHP05 respectively, combined with 2,300 bopd from CHP-03, the entire fairway is now covered.

With recent drilling results exceeding expectations, the Chaparrito field now accounts for approximately 40 percent of Perenco Colombia’s total production, it noted. Further reprocessing of seismic data is ongoing to assess the possibility of drilling new channels.

Gaël Piardet, General Manager of Perenco Colombia, said, “These discoveries are the result of the hard work and expertise of our teams and endorse our investment strategy in Colombia. Our goal is to replicate this success by continuing with reprocessing seismic data from other areas and drilling two development wells and one exploration well per year over the coming years”.

“The Perenco Group implements rigorous environmental protection measures and initiatives to support regional economic development. As such, Perenco Colombia is committed to working closely with the Colombian authorities and local communities to ensure a responsible and beneficial exploitation of the country’s resources,” Piardet added.

According to the release, Perenco Colombia produces 15,000 bopd. The company is part of the Perenco Group, which operates in 14 partner countries and is based in the United Kingdom.

T&T Assets Acquired from BP

Last month, BP Trinidad and Tobago (BPTT) signed an agreement to divest its Immortelle, Flamboyant, Amherstia, and Cashima offshore gas fields and associated production facilities to Perenco Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). The agreement also includes the undeveloped resources from the Parang field.

BPTT operates, and currently is the sole owner of each of the assets included in the agreement. The fields, with the exception of Parang, are mature fields that have been in production from as early as 1993 and currently produce a total of approximately 30,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd). As part of the deal, BPTT will purchase the gas produced from these fields to continue to meet its existing contractual obligations, according to an earlier news release.

BPTT President David Campbell said, “Divesting these mature assets will high-grade our portfolio in Trinidad and Tobago as we focus on continuing to develop our shallow water gas portfolio and pursuing growth opportunities with both deep water and cross-border gas resources. This is part of our mission to accelerate gas production, create value and unlock the energy future of Trinidad and Tobago. Meanwhile, Perenco will be able to apply their mature asset expertise to extend these fields’ producing life and support maximum recovery of resources”.

Perenco CEO Armel Simondin said, “This is a welcome opportunity for Perenco to grow our Trinidad and Tobago portfolio, validating our entry into the country in 2016. Over the past eight years, Perenco T&T has completed several ambitious projects at the mature TSP [Teak, Samaan and Poui] asset and has become a sizeable supplier of gas for the domestic market. We will apply our mature field expertise to develop further the resources from these newly acquired fields. We look forward to welcoming the BPTT employees who will transfer with the assets and are delighted to work together with BPTT towards protecting Trinidad and Tobago’s energy security. We view this as an important milestone in the history of gas supply for T&T”.

Perenco T&T has been producing hydrocarbons in Trinidad & Tobago since 2016, when it took over operatorship of the Teak, Samaan and Poui (TSP) fields, located offshore the south-east coast of Trinidad, according to the release.
