Two major bridges taking traffic in and out of Chaguanas should be re-opened before the start of the new school term in September.

The assurance came from Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan yesterday.

Sinanan said works commenced at the Perseverance Road River Bridge at Woodford Lodge over the weekend. He said tenders closed last Monday and a contract was awarded, and the contractor started mobilising last Wednesday.

Sinanan said the contractor will first move to stabilise the base of the bridge and then undertake repair works.

The bridge started collapsing on July 31 following heavy rains that led to floodwaters washing away its footing. It became impassable, which has led to massive traffic jams since Perseverance Road is a major artery in and out of Chaguanas.

Sinanan also said the bridge at Bridal Road, Cunupia, should be completed by the end of August. The closure of that bridge had led to congestion along Jerningham Railway Road and Munroe Road.

Sinanan also said he was satisfied with the work done by contractors to repair a sinkhole along the Uriah Butler Highway, near the Grand Bazaar mall. The sinkhole developed last week.

Sinanan said a 60-year-old culvert crossing was replaced and works were completed ahead of schedule on Sunday.
