Perseverance bridge set to reopen Friday—Mayor
The Perseverance Road bridge in Chaguanas, which began collapsing last July, is expected to accommodate vehicles by Friday, says Chaguanas Mayor Faaiq Mohammed.
Despite not receiving any official correspondence from the Ministry of Works and Transport, Mohammed said he visited the site and was informed by an on-site official that the bridge was on schedule to reopen.
“I didn’t receive any updates from the ministry, but I visited the site and saw that they are already casting and levelling the roadway. I spoke to an official there, and they confirmed that the bridge is on schedule to open on Friday for traffic. We’ll be heading back tomorrow (today) to ensure that everything remains on schedule and to get the latest report,” the mayor told Guardian Media yesterday.
The bridge began to crack in July, with the southern end dropping over 20 inches due to soil erosion caused by heavy floodwaters.
This damage led to the bridge’s closure, significantly increasing traffic in the Chaguanas borough centre. The situation also sparked a dispute between central and local government officials, each saying the other was responsible for repairing the structure.
Guardian Media attempted to contact Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan for comment on whether the statements made by the Chaguanas Mayor were accurate, but calls to his cellphone went unanswered. Sinanan had previously said the bridge should be opened in time for the new school year.
