The Peruvian government regretted this Sunday and expressed its concern about the The decision of the government of Nicolás Maduro to withdraw its consent for Brazil to exercise the representation and protection of Argentina’s interests in Caracas, a figure that also applies to Peru’s interests in the country.

In an official statement, the Foreign Ministry said that the measure adopted by the Venezuelan government ignores the guarantees established in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.

“Peru regrets and expresses its serious concern over the decision of the Government of Venezuela to withdraw its consent for Brazil to continue to represent and protect Argentina’s interests in Caracas, which ignores the guarantees established in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961,” the statement reads.

In this regard, the Andean country urges the Government of Venezuela to fully guarantee the inviolability of the premises, assets and archives of Argentina in that country and to safeguard the integrity and fundamental rights of those seeking asylum in that diplomatic headquarters.

“The Peruvian government expresses its solidarity with the governments of Argentina and Brazil for the situation they are currently facing,” the Foreign Ministry added in a statement.

Just as it did with Argentina, the Maduro government announced last August that Brazil would be in charge of safeguarding Peru’s diplomatic missions in that country and representing its interests, in accordance with the aforementioned Vienna Convention.

Maduro yesterday revoked the authorization to Brazil to protect Argentine interests for the alleged planning of “terrorist activities” by the refugees in the Argentine facilities, whom he also accused of planning “assassination attempts” against Maduro and Vice President Delcy Rodríguez.

Following the move, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry said it will remain in charge of safeguarding and defending Argentina’s interests until the southern country “designates another State acceptable” to Maduro to carry out those functions.

Regarding the situation, Argentina expressed its rejection of the decision to “unilaterally revoke” Brazil’s authorization to represent Argentine interests and guard its diplomatic facilities in Caracas.
