The police service is calling on citizens to be more careful when crossing the nation’s roadways, after two people were killed in two separate incidents on Thursday.

On Thursday morning at Montrose Junction in Chaguanas, Elizabeth Indra Dass was killed after being crushed under the wheels of a trailer truck.

Dass, 57, a manager at Lomas Dass and Sons Transport, located at Thompson Road, Palmiste, had just visited the nearby First Citizens bank to do a transaction when she was struck by the vehicle around 11 am.

In a statement on Friday, the police service warned that large trucks, especially extra-heavy goods vehicles, have large blind spots, which can greatly reduce the visibility of drivers at certain angles.

Hours after Dass’ death, an unidentified man was killed while attempting to cross the Churchill Roosevelt Highway.

Police said around 7.10 pm, the 71-year-old driver of a silver Mazda 626 collided with the man in the Maloney area near Bescrete.

Police said the driver was heading east, at a poorly lit area, when the deceased stepped in his path. The driver reportedly slammed his brakes but still managed to collide with the man who was wearing a purple jersey, black camouflage tights and blue three-quarter pants.

The victim was described as a man of African descent, approximately mid-60s, strong built, dark in complexion, greying rasta hairstyle and approximately 5 ft. 6 inches tall.

The road death toll now stands at 35 with five of them being pedestrians.
