Prisoner charged for making threatening video from jail

  • Sep, Thu, 2024

A prisoner serving a murder sentence is set to appear in court today after being charged with “Making a Video Recording Inside the Prison Walls Without the Written Authority of the Commissioner of Prisons.”

The prisoner, Dwayne Romany, was charged on September 18, 2024, under the Prisons Act, thanks to a collaboration between the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the Prison Service.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin led the investigation, which involved the Special Investigations Unit and prison officers. They discovered that between August 25 and September 10, 2024, an inmate at the Port-of-Spain Prison allegedly recorded a video threatening the lives of prison officers and their families. In the video, he demanded changes within the prison or warned of “war.”

DCP Martin emphasized that the TTPS takes threats against citizens, especially those aimed at protective services, very seriously. She advised criminals to reconsider their actions, stating that intimidation or violence, whether inside or outside prison, will not go unpunished.

Investigations are ongoing.
