Venezuelan environmental NGO Provita incorporated 222 breeding of Margarita parrots in the state of Nueva Espartaan endangered species, that survived thanks to the construction of artificial nests and the vigilance of their caretakers, from birth until they took their first flight, the organization reported in a note released on Tuesday.

«The Margarita parrot, emblematic bird of the state of Nueva Esparta, faces serious threats in Venezuela, with its wild populations rapidly declining. due to illegal capture for the pet trade and habitat loss due to deforestation“the organization warned.

The NGO highlighted that, for the fourth consecutive year, manages to ensure that more than 200 Margarita parrot chicks survivewithout specifying the period in which they were under their protection, until the incorporation of the offspring.

He also said that the “success of this breeding season” is due, “in large part, to the hard work of 18 eco-guardians from the communities of the Macanao Peninsula” in Nueva Esparta.

Biologist and analyst of the Provita conservation program, Jesús Aranguren, recalled that “the protection and conservation” of the baby parrots It is “crucial to ensure recovery and sustainability” of this species in its natural environment.”

Last March, the NGO said that the species is “almost endemic to Venezuela” as it only lives in “isolated localities” in the “arid areas of the north of the country” and on the island of Bonaire, a Dutch territory in the Caribbean.

Provita has been working for more than 30 years in Nueva Esparta “to recover the local population of the species.”
