On September 19, the national government ordered, by decree number 5,009, the intervention of Bolivariana de Puertos (Bolipuertos), the state entity in charge of managing the country’s ports.

The measure, published in the extraordinary Official Gazette No. 6,843, responds to complaints of operational and administrative deficiencies that compromised both the operation of the ports and Venezuela’s foreign trade, according to the Finanzas Digital web portal.

The decree establishes an intervention team, appointed by the national Executive, with powers to reorganize operations and guarantee that the ports function optimally, which will operate within one year from the publication of the decree. It will be made up of a president and four main members with their respective substitutes, freely appointed and removed by the President of the Republic.

For now, it is known, according to article 5 of the decree, that citizen Germán Edoardo Gómez Lárez has been designated as president of the board, who must present monthly reports on his management to the Executive Vice Presidency of the Republic, and that he has 60 days to dictate the internal operating regulations of the intervening body.

This action seeks to correct internal failures that would have negatively affected the efficiency and productivity of key port facilities in Puerto Cabello, Maracaibo and La Guaira, among others.
